Midland Amateur Sports Capital Committee

Mike Murphy attended Midland High School and earned six Varsity Letters plus Most Valuable Player honors in cross-country and track from 1967 thru graduation in 1969. He also earned the 1969 Gilbert A. Currie Award for Outstanding Contributions to MHS athletics.

As a MHS senior, Murphy set the all-time (high school or college) Finch Fieldhouse 440 Yd. Dash record of 49.7 at the CMU Indoor Invitational. At the prestigious Mansfield Ohio Relays meet, he anchored the Chemic Mile Relay team to victory over 296 schools from six states and Canada. He went on to set the MHS and Saginaw Valley League meet records in the 400 Yd. Dash with a time of 48.0. He also anchored MHS’ record 880 Yd. Relay and Mile Relay teams with record times which still stand to this day. Murphy was All-State (2nd) in the 440 Yd. Dash at the 1969 MHSAA State Class "A" Meet.

Murphy received a scholarship to run track at Michigan State University. While at MSU from 1970 thru 1973, Murphy earned four Varsity Letters and was a co-captain his senior year. He was a member of six MSU Big-10 Conference Champion Mile Relay teams. At the 1971 Big-10 Indoor Championships at Wisconsin, his MSU Mile Relay team set a World Record time of 3:12.9 for a 220 Yd. unbanked surface distance. Murphy also achieved All-American Honors at the 1971 NCAA Indoor National Championships where the MSU Mile Relay team placed 3rd.

Murphy's former Midland Track Coaches include Don Kasper, Ernie Malzahn and Gary Jozwiak---all members of the Midland County Sports Hall of Fame.
