Vern Ruhle was an outstanding baseball pitcher at Coleman High School. It was not uncommon for him to pitch every game of his team’s 14-16 game schedule and he once struck out 22 batters in one seven inning game.

Ruhle went on to star at Olivet College and was a seventeenth round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 1972. Ruhle spent two years in the minors before being promoted to the Tigers in September 1974.

Ruhle was the Tigers Rookie of the Year in 1975. Over his ten-year major league career he also played with the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians and California Angels. Ruhle had his best year in 1980 when he compiled a record of 12-4 with a 2.38 ERA for the National League Western Division Champion, Houston Astros. Ruhle retired in 1987 and entered the field of coaching at the collegiate level.
